The Bharatiya Janata Party won the Gujarat assembly elections for a record seventh consecutive term, sweeping 142 out of 182 seats in results that defied exit poll predictions of a closer contest. The massive majority gave the BJP two-thirds of seats in the assembly, making it the longest unbroken run by any party in a major Indian state. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel was immediately confirmed as continuing in his role, with Prime Minister Modi declaring the result a mandate for vikas and good governance.
The Congress, which had set a target of 80 seats, won only 38, a slight improvement from 2022 but far short of its ambitions. The Aam Aadmi Party, which had made inroads in 2022, was reduced to two seats, a devastating collapse that raises questions about its Gujarat strategy. BJP national president J.P. Nadda called the result a historic mandate and a personal tribute to Prime Minister Modi towering leadership. Psephologists noted that BJP combination of welfare scheme delivery, infrastructure development, and community outreach made the Gujarat vote an exceptionally strong endorsement across virtually all demographic groups.
