The United Nations Security Council convened an emergency session on Monday to discuss a new ceasefire framework for Gaza following weeks of intensified conflict that killed over 3,200 civilians in the past month. The session was called by France and the UAE, who tabled a resolution calling for an immediate 45-day humanitarian pause, resumed food and medical aid corridors, and release of all remaining hostages. The US signalled cautious support while emphasising the need for verifiable compliance mechanisms.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the situation in northern Gaza as a humanitarian catastrophe beyond precedent in modern times. Russia and China indicated support for a stronger version that includes a permanent ceasefire clause. Hamas said it would consider any proposal that includes a full Israeli withdrawal, while Israel insisted all resolutions must address hostage security first.
