Diplomatic efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war suffered a major setback on Tuesday as Russian negotiators rejected the core terms of a peace framework proposed by European mediators and backed by the US. The plan called for a ceasefire along the current line of contact, internationally monitored elections in Ukraine, and gradual sanctions relief. Moscow rejected the proposal outright, insisting it would not accept any settlement that does not recognise its sovereignty over the four annexed regions.
Ukrainian President Zelensky said his government remains committed to a just peace but would not surrender any territory under international law. NATO Secretary-General Rutte urged member states to continue military and financial support for Kyiv, stating that any peace achieved through coercion would be temporary. Both sides continue to suffer heavy losses along the 1,100-km front line with no decisive breakthrough on either side.
