Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated the 2,000 MW Ramnathapuram Solar Park on Saturday, describing it as a landmark achievement in the state push for clean energy. Built at a cost of Rs 8,400 crore over three years, the park is spread across 12,000 acres in Ramnathapuram district and will supply power to approximately 15 lakh households across the state. It is now the largest operational solar installation in South India.
The project, developed by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) in partnership with three private energy firms, is expected to offset around 3.2 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually. Stalin said the state aims to achieve 50% renewable energy in its power mix by 2030. The park features advanced bifacial solar panels and a centralized monitoring system that enables real-time performance tracking across all 6,800 solar arrays.
