The Union Cabinet approved the second funding tranche of the National Green Hydrogen Mission on Wednesday, sanctioning Rs 1,000 crore for the period 2025-27. The mission targets producing 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen per year by 2030, which would make India one of the largest producers globally. Under the new tranche, funds will be deployed for setting up electrolysis manufacturing clusters, pilot projects in the steel and shipping sectors, and a national hydrogen grid feasibility study.
Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said green hydrogen would help decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors including fertilisers, refining, and long-haul transport. India is targeting investments of Rs 8 lakh crore in the hydrogen sector by 2030, creating approximately 600,000 direct and indirect jobs. NTPC, Indian Oil, and Reliance Industries have already committed to green hydrogen projects under the first tranche, with a combined electrolyser capacity of 1.2 GW planned for commissioning by 2026.
