Severe flooding triggered by early monsoon rains has displaced over 2 lakh people across 18 districts of Assam, with the Brahmaputra and its tributaries breaching their danger levels at seven gauging stations. The Indian Army deployed 30 boats and 400 personnel for rescue operations in Morigaon, Nagaon, and Kamrup districts, evacuating over 8,000 stranded residents from submerged areas. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority said 142 relief camps are operational across affected districts.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma conducted an aerial survey of the flooded areas and declared a state emergency. More than 35,000 hectares of cropland have been inundated, threatening the livelihoods of thousands of farmers. The Central Water Commission has warned that water levels in the Brahmaputra are likely to rise further over the next 72 hours. The National Highways Authority reported that the NH-27, the main east-west corridor, has been submerged at two locations in Nagaon district.
