India wrestling contingent delivered the country best-ever Asian Games performance by winning three gold medals, two silver medals, and one bronze across freestyle and Greco-Roman disciplines. Bajrang Punia anchored the campaign with a dominant gold in the men 65 kg freestyle category, defeating his South Korean opponent 8-3 in the final. Vinesh Phogat took gold in the women 53 kg and Antim Panghal, just 20 years old, clinched the women 53 kg freestyle title after a tense sudden-death overtime period.
The Wrestling Federation of India called the haul the finest chapter in the history of Indian wrestling. India finished with a total of 84 medals including 22 gold to rank fifth on the overall Asian Games medal tally, ahead of historical performances from previous editions. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya met the wrestling contingent on their return and announced a Rs 50 lakh cash prize for each gold medallist from the Sports Authority of India fund.
