Leaders of the G7 nations agreed at their annual summit in Torino, Italy, to adopt a landmark code of conduct for advanced artificial intelligence systems, establishing the first multilateral AI governance framework among the world largest economies. The agreement requires companies developing frontier AI models to conduct mandatory safety evaluations, share results with regulatory bodies, and publish transparency disclosures about training data before deployment. The framework also includes export controls on advanced AI chips.

US President Biden called it a historic moment that strikes the right balance between enabling innovation and managing risks. The framework will be monitored by a new body under the OECD. India, a G20 observer at the summit, welcomed the framework but called for greater inclusion of developing countries in its governance structure. Civil society groups cautiously welcomed the agreement while arguing enforcement mechanisms remain too weak to truly hold Big Tech accountable.
