Indian stand-up comedy has officially arrived on the global stage as Mumbai comedian Vir Das became the first Indian comedian to perform a solo stand-up show on Broadway, running for 21 nights at the Ambassador Theatre in New York to sold-out audiences. Das, who has two Netflix specials to his name, received rave reviews from The New York Times and The Guardian, both calling his show a masterclass in cross-cultural comedy that bridges India and the West without condescending to either. The Broadway run followed his sold-out 90-city world tour that grossed Rs 120 crore.
Vir Das said at a press conference that 20 years ago no one outside India knew what a desi comic was and today the world is laughing with us, not just at us. The broader Indian comedy ecosystem is thriving globally with YouTube channels of comics including Zakir Khan, Anubhav Singh Bassi, and Samay Raina each exceeding 15 million subscribers and generating hundreds of millions of views. BookMyShow reported stand-up comedy ticket sales grew 55% in 2025, making it the fastest-growing live entertainment category in India, overtaking classical music and traditional theatre for the first time.
