Alia Bhatt has been confirmed as the female lead in an upcoming Steven Spielberg-directed Hollywood production, marking the most significant crossover moment for a Bollywood actor in the global film industry. The untitled film, to be produced by Amblin Entertainment and Paramount Pictures, is a historical thriller set partially in colonial India with Bhatt playing an Indian intelligence agent. Spielberg confirmed the casting in an interview with Variety, calling Bhatt one of the most versatile and compelling screen presences he has encountered.
Bhatt posted a tearful video message saying her dream of international cinema has always been important to her and working with Spielberg is beyond anything she could have imagined. The film will shoot for six months in India, the UK, and the US starting April 2026 with a worldwide theatrical release targeted for summer 2027. Bhatt co-producer Kabir Khan said this is a historic moment for Indian cinema that validates what Indian actors have always known — that Bollywood talent can command the world stage. The casting generated over 10 million social media mentions within 12 hours of the announcement.
